FMCSA 49 CFR 393.95 requires: a fire extinguisher (properly rated and charged), three reflective warning triangles (or six fusees/flares), and spare fuses (unless the truck uses circuit breakers). While these are the legal minimums, relying on just these items is reckless. A comprehensive emergency kit protects your safety, your cargo, and your livelihood.
Do a full inventory check every 3 months. Replace expired first aid supplies, swap out old batteries, check fire extinguisher pressure, test flashlights and headlamps, and replace any food or water. After using any item, replace it at your next fuel stop. A kit you have not checked in a year probably has dead batteries and expired supplies.
This is a personal decision with significant legal complexity. Firearm laws vary dramatically by state, and as an interstate driver you cross multiple jurisdictions daily. Some states honor your home state's carry permit, others do not. Many shippers, receivers, and truck stops prohibit firearms on their property. If you choose to carry, research every state on your regular routes and consult a firearms attorney.
Store items you might need on the roadside (triangles, vest, flashlight, fire extinguisher) in an easily accessible location — not buried under cargo or in the sleeper. The fire extinguisher should be mounted within reach of the driver's seat. Keep the first aid kit in the cab. Tools and seasonal items can go in side boxes. The key rule: if you cannot reach it in an emergency, it is useless.
