Yes. FMCSA regulation 49 CFR 396.11 requires drivers to prepare a written report (DVIR) at the end of each day's work on each vehicle operated. The report must cover at minimum: service brakes, parking brake, steering, lights, tires, horn, windshield wipers, rear vision mirrors, coupling devices, wheels and rims, and emergency equipment. Even if no defects are found, you must document the inspection.
A pre-trip confirms the truck is safe to operate before you drive. A post-trip identifies problems that developed during the day so they can be repaired overnight before the next trip. Together they create a continuous safety loop. Many drivers find post-trip inspections actually catch more issues because problems develop under load and at operating temperature.
Document it on your DVIR immediately. If the defect affects safe operation (brakes, steering, tires, lights), the vehicle should not be dispatched until repaired. Report the defect to your carrier or maintenance provider. The motor carrier must sign off that repairs were made before the truck can be used again.
