Frequently Asked Questions

Absolutely. Spending $200-$400 on an independent pre-purchase inspection at a reputable diesel shop is the best money you can spend. They will put the truck on a lift, pull codes, and catch things you might miss. Never rely solely on the seller's mechanic — they have a financial interest in the sale going through.
There is no magic number because maintenance history matters more than miles. A well-maintained truck with 800,000 miles and full service records can be a better buy than a neglected truck at 400,000 miles. That said, major components (in-frame overhaul, transmission, rear ends) typically need attention between 750,000 and 1,000,000 miles, so budget accordingly.
Each has pros and cons. Dealers offer financing, sometimes warranties, and a wider selection, but prices are 10-20% higher. Private sellers offer lower prices but zero warranty and you handle all paperwork. Either way, always get an independent inspection. Dealer 'certified' inspections are marketing tools, not guarantees.
A seller who refuses to let you get an independent inspection or pulls the 'I have another buyer coming tomorrow' pressure tactic. Other major red flags: no maintenance records, deleted emissions systems (illegal and can result in $5,000+ EPA fines), mismatched VINs, and a truck that has been sitting for months (seals dry out, fuel goes bad, batteries die).
