There is no magic number because maintenance history matters more than miles. A well-maintained truck with 800,000 miles and full service records can be a better buy than a neglected truck at 400,000 miles. That said, major components (in-frame overhaul, transmission, rear ends) typically need attention between 750,000 and 1,000,000 miles, so budget accordingly.

Each has pros and cons. Dealers offer financing, sometimes warranties, and a wider selection, but prices are 10-20% higher. Private sellers offer lower prices but zero warranty and you handle all paperwork. Either way, always get an independent inspection. Dealer 'certified' inspections are marketing tools, not guarantees.
